DESCRIPTION:

CS 490, Special Projects in Computer Science:  Real-time Robotics, is an advanced robotics course that will be entirely focused on large-scale, semester-long team projects to build high-profile, robust and sophisticated robots.  These projects will be more ambitious than anything attempted at the NERL before, and the resulting robots will be highly publicized at the end of the semester.  Possible projects include:  Speedracer, a high-speed tele-presence racing rover; Ariel, a flying tele-presence robot for air-sampling; Thinkpad You, a mobile Thinkpad; Juggler, a multi-tasking 'bot using real-time Linux; and Platoon, a highly coordinated group of cooperating robots.  This course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:40pm, and is meant for upperclass computing majors or otherwise sophisticated students who can bring either broad expertise in hardware and software or significant experience in one area, such as digital circuits, programming, video encoding, or operating systems.  Alumni of previous robotics courses are encouraged to enroll (we'll need you!).

Please contact Jeffrey Horn (jhorn@nmu.edu, 227-1607) with questions.

NOTE:  Non-CS majors are especially encouraged to enroll, as we would like to utilize the skills and knowledge of those with significant IT, ET, or other digital circuits coursework under their belts!  These projects will require diverse teams.
