HOMEWORK 5: "Nested Objects"

• Due:  Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, end of day  
• Purpose:  LEARN
1. How to create "composite objects", that is, objects with other objects "inside".
2. How to USE object nesting to break up the functionality of large programs into smaller, semi-separate modules.
3. How to design an "object hierarchy" of at least three levels (e.g., window within a floor within the house).
4. How to make an "outer" object communicate with an "inner"object, by passing messages (i.e., calling methods).
• Assignment:
1. Get the "House" code from Chapter 5 of our text (here).  Make sure it works!
2. Add a third floor exactly like the second floor.
3. Add a few windows or doors to the roof (at least two).
4. Write "chimney"class and add TWO or more chimneys to the roof (using NESTED OBJECTS!) (just like our "doorknob" class example we did in class.
5. Allow users to toggle each window in an interesting way (e.g., toggle light on or off, break or unbreak window, open or close it), simply by clicking on it.  Use "inter-object" communication, so that the house object picks up the mouse click, passes that on to the appropriate floor, which passes it on to the appropriate window, which does the right thing! 
6. In addition to "visual" toggling (above), also add SOUND!  When the window is one of the two states (e.g., light ON), play a particular audio clip over and over (use "loop()").  When the window gets toggled to the other state, have the sound stop (use "stop()").  Have at least three different clips.
7. When the user clicks on the door, toggle all windows ON, so that all sounds are playing at once.  Do not provide any way to turn them all off at once!  (the user has to click on EACH window to shut everything off.)
8. Display the current number of sounds playing (i.e., windows toggled) somewhere on screen.  There are several ways to do this (e.g., ASK each window if it is ON, and sum that up in "paint()" in the applet, OR use a class variable that has been declared "static" in the Window class).

9. Put your name, date, the class, and the assignment number in comments at the TOP of your source code.

10. Comment EVERY single new variable AND method that you create.   For this assignment, I WILL start being picky about the CONTENT of your comments.  So be brief, but descriptive!
