STUDENT CHAPTER ACM
The ACM (Association for Computing Machinery)
is the student organization for Computer Science and Network
Computing majors. The club was founded in 2000 as a way for student
programmers to interact socially and professionally. The activities
are chosen by the members and generally include such things as LAN
gaming, LINUX install fests, and movie nights. The ACM involves
itself in two programming contests each year: one in the fall and
one in the spring. The spring contest is held at NMU and is
organized by the members of the ACM. The ACM also involves itself
in various road trips throughout the year; in particular, ACM
members participate in the Argonne Undergraduate Symposium
(observing student research projects or presenting their own) each
year.
On Saturday 10 November 2007, NMU participated
in the ACM East Central North America Regional Programming Contest,
held simultaneously in multiple sites; we were in Ann Arbor,
Michigan. NMU Team Redundancy Team took 31st. place and Team $TEXAS
took 75th. out of 114 teams competing. This was the first time NMU
competed in this contest; normally we compete at the North Central
North America contest, but that contest was the same date as the
Argonne Undergraduate Symposium, and many ACM members were committed
to that trip. NMU did very well at this competition, which
attracted teams from much larger universities. In particular, Team
Redundancy Team took 6th. place out of the 25 teams competing in Ann
Arbor.
